Dr. Mike Majmundar, double board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, performs buccal fat removal for the residents of Atlanta, Sandy Springs and the surrounding communities in Georgia.

What is the Buccal Fat pad?

Buccal fat is the fat located just lateral to the marionette fold of the mouth. It doesn’t seem to change with time or age or weight gain / loss; however, it does seem to become more prominent with age as a result of laxity of the surrounding tissues that causes it to lump up or as a result of volume loss around the fat pad causing it to appear prominent.

Many people who have prominent buccal fat pads are born with them and call it their baby fat or comment that their face is ‘bottom heavy’ or their lower cheek is full.

How is buccal fat pad removal performed?

Buccal fat removal is performed with a small incision inside the cheek in the mouth. It can be performed in the office under local anesthesia within 30-45 min for both sides. Though there is mild swelling after the procedure for a few days, the result can be seen almost immediately.

What should I expect after the buccal fat pad removal procedure?

Most individuals will swell for 7 days; some may even bruise for the same amount of time though this is uncommon. To reduce the risk of further swelling and bruising, we ask that the patient refrain from heavy exercise for that period. Discomfort is minimal and most individuals use Tylenol for this.
