How does forehead reduction surgery work?
The hairline can usually be brought forward approximately 1-1.5 inches in a single stage in most cases, depending on scalp mobility and the location of the current hairline. Of course, the hairline cannot be brought forward to its location in youth because this may not look natural or age-appropriate for the individual at their current point in life. In individuals who desire more than 1.5-2 inches of advancement, a tissue expander may be necessary. A tissue expander is placed under the scalp and gradually and slowly expanded over 4-6 weeks to ‘stretch’ the scalp, allowing more scalp to be advanced. Once this ‘extra’ skin is created through expansion, the expander is removed and simultaneously the hairline is advanced and secured.
A browlift, if needed, can be performed at the same time as a hairline lowering procedure; however, it is important to note that the brow does not rise with this surgery and has to be performed as a different procedure, though the 2 procedures can be combined. Men are also candidates for hairline lowering surgery but they must have a longer history of stable hair loss and a family history that does not demonstrate male pattern baldness, along with a thick anterior hairline.
What does lowering the hairline with forehead reduction surgery in Atlanta entail?
The most common type of female hair loss seen in our practice is thinning of the anterior hairline or the hairline above the forehead. We recommend medical hair loss therapy first prior to any surgery. In some women, the hairline recedes in addition to thinning. For these women, hairline lowering surgery may be beneficial.
Causes include genetics, pulling the hair back too tightly, medications, aging, and previous surgery, among others. The hair loss should be stable for a period of time, at least 6-12 months, before considering hairline lowering.
