What is a facelift?
A facelift is a surgical cosmetic procedure that aims to rejuvenate and tighten the facial skin and underlying tissues, reducing the appearance of sagging, wrinkles, and other signs of aging. The surgery involves repositioning and tightening the muscles and skin, resulting in a more youthful and refreshed facial appearance.

What is the cost of a natural facelift?
The cost of a facelift in Atlanta varies widely on a couple of factors, some of them related to the patient and others related to the surgeon. Nationally, the average cost of a facelift is $8,005, although this price does not include a number of related expenses including hospital fees or anesthesia. A facelift can range anywhere from $8,000 - $15,000. Costs are assessed individually at your consultation and will vary based on whether you undergo a facelift alone or in tandem with additional procedures such as a brow lift or blepharoplasty. Our offices will provide you with financing options.
What are the components of a natural facelift?
Components of the natural facelift include facial volumization with natural tissues such as collagen or fat or state-of-the-art injectables, and an advanced surgical approach that lifts the skin and underlying facial structures at a natural angle.
Natural facelifts are usually combined with tightening of the facial and neck muscles, as well as neck liposuction, to remove excess fat under the chin (“double chin”), if needed. In order to achieve a balanced and proportional result, eyelid and brow lift surgery can be recommended at the same time so that the entire face appears rejuvenated and is able to age “in sync.”
Am I a good candidate for a facelift?
Determining if you're a suitable candidate for a facelift involves considering various factors. Here's what to consider:
- Age: Generally, individuals in their 40s to 60s see the best results.
- Skin Elasticity: Good elasticity enhances the outcome.
- Sagging Skin: If you have noticeable sagging around your face and neck, a facelift can help.
- Healthy Lifestyle: Being in good health contributes to safe recovery.
- Realistic Expectations: Understand achievable outcomes.
- Consultation: A qualified surgeon can assess your unique needs.
- Non-Smoker: Smoking can impact healing negatively.
- No Medical Contradictions: Certain conditions might affect candidacy.
After a consultation with Dr. Majmundar at Northside Plastic Surgery, the best approach to treating the patient’s issues can be determined.

How does the natural facelift differ from traditional facelifts?
Unlike traditional facelifts that rely on pulling the skin to obtain the lift, in our natural facelift in Alpharetta, tissues underneath the skin (such as muscle, SMAS, and deep plane facelift elements) are tightened instead, followed by a gentle re-draping of the facial and neck skin over the tightened tissues. Excess skin is still removed, but because we don’t rely on pulling the skin to get the lift, we can avoid a pulled or overdone appearance every time. Because the skin isn’t pulled tightly, there is less tension on the incision when sutured back together making a better scar.
When skin is pulled too tightly, it can not only give a person a pulled look, but it also causes the scars to widen and become unsightly. This is a problem for women who wear their hair up when working out or for men who have short hair. By avoiding this stress on the skin with the natural facelift, the incisions heal almost invisibly, allowing the person to wear their hair any way they want.
What can I expect from my facelift surgery?
Dr. Majmundar begin the incision in the area of the temple hair just above the ear, and then proceeds in front of the ear, around the earlobe, partially circling the ear and back into the hairline. We take the extra step and carry the incision behind the tragus (the flap of skin that hides the opening to your ear canal) before circling the earlobe to help hide the incisions even more. In an individual who has no sideburns or high sideburns, the incision may begin below the sideburn to pull it down during the procedure.
In all cases, the incision is placed where it would fall in a natural skin crease for camouflage. The incisions are then closed with fine sutures to reduce the chance of any visible scarring. For many patients, rejuvenating the upper face with the lower face is recommended to balance the youthful contours of the lower face and to allow the face to age “in sync”. As a result, a natural appearance is maintained over time.

What can I expect from recovery?
Most patients experience very little pain after surgery. In fact, greater than 95% of patients only use Tylenol. Swelling and bruising are attendant to every surgical procedure and are necessary to healing. These can be mitigated with plenty of rest, keeping the head elevated particularly while sleeping, cold compresses and ice packs. Very light exercise should be done briefly daily; a walk around the block or half of it will aid in circulation and healing. Take it cautiously, relax and learn your temporary new limits. A healthy diet will also aid recovery. Dr. Majmundar will prescribe pain medication for you to use as needed. Some degree of swelling and bruising is unavoidable, but this can be minimized with medication to help shorten the recovery time.
Recovering from a facelift typically requires 10 to 14 days, although some patients go back to work, such as at a desk job, in as few as 7 days. Makeup and sunscreen can also be worn after seven days.
Maintaining a natural facelift is a must, with a good skincare routine, annual treatments, and the replenishment of facial volume if it diminishes. Thankfully, once the clock is turned back with our natural facelift, you never lose the benefits that are gained.
- Surgery: Outpatient
- Anesthesia: IV sedation or general anesthesia
- Procedure length: On average, 2 ½ hours
- Recovery: On average, 10-14 days.
What are the benefits of a deep plane facelift?
This exacting facial rejuvenation procedure comes with many benefits over a traditional facelift:
- The deep plane facelift is no more risky to a patient than a traditional facelift.
- It releases and repositions ligaments that would otherwise hold the face in an aged position.
- It repositions the entire facial structure rather than parts of it.
- Rejuvenates the face of patients of all ages, restoring youthfulness and facial volume.
What is recovery like from a deep plane facelift?
As with all facial surgeries, patients should expect mild to moderate swelling, bruising and some pain which is manageable by pain medication. Patients typically return to work and their social activities within 10 to 14 days of a deep plane facelift, at which point makeup will conceal the remnants of any mild bruising.

Facelift FAQ
How young is too young for a facelift in Atlanta?
A. The youngest of facelift patients are typically in the early 40s. Patients younger than this getting a facelift is exceedingly rare, and is usually done for genetically inelastic skin, not for cosmetic reasons. Patients younger than 40 are in their youth! If interested in improving the elasticity of your skin at this age, use medical skin care products such Retin A and an antioxidant with a good sunscreen and consider microneedling or ultherapy for skin tightening. Or, if a specific part of your face bothers you, consider a small volume of facial filler to lift the area.
How old is too old for a facelift?
A. The oldest patient to receive a facelift at Northside Plastic Surgery was 88 years old. Age, however, is less of a factor than one’s overall health and vitality. If you are over 40-years-old and wake every morning to a feeling of wanting to change your face and look more youthful, you’re likely a candidate for a facelift — particularly our Natural facelift, which aims to maintain the underlying anatomy and give patients a long-lasting youthful appearance.
How Long Does a Facelift Last?
A. Our mini-facelifts, Natural facelifts, and Natural Deep Plane Facelift last 7 or longer. It can last much longer if you take care of your skin using medical grade treatments and maintaining appropriate volume support in the skin. The difference in the range of years depends upon your skin type and elasticity, your ethnicity, age, weight, genetics, rate of volume loss and maintenance routines. Medical grade skin care and complementary procedures including Botox, fillers, and chemical peels will improve the appearance of the skin and support structures, and maintain the health and quality of your facelift.
Are there any non-surgical alternatives that match the results of a facelift?
A. There are several nonsurgical facelift options available today. These options can get close to a facelift result but they will not completely parallel the results of a surgical facelift. The most popular nonsurgical facelift options include Ultherapy, Genius RF, liquid facelifts using fillers such as Sculptra, thread facelifts, and ThermiRF. Which option is right for you depends on a number of different factors so consulting with an experienced facial plastic surgeon to select the most appropriate therapy is of paramount importance. A good skin care regimen and the use of topical creams will give a more youthful appearance and prolong the life of any nonsurgical facelift that is performed: Glycolic acids, retin-A, antioxidants and sunscreens can help with spots, fine lines and wrinkles, textural changes, skin color and subtle tightening.
How long will it be before swelling is totally gone after a facelift?
A. As with all surgical procedures, swelling after a facelift is very normal and to be expected. Patients will typically be presentable with makeup, on average, within 14 days of their facelift. There are patients on either side of these numbers, as well as actions patients can take to speed healing. Patients with a fuller face (and thus more soft tissue) will retain fluid longer and experience extended swelling, closer to 20 days. Patients who bruise easily will also have heavier than normal swelling. The degree or severity of swelling you experience, in itself is not a sign of how long swelling will last, as a robust immune system will likely cause more swelling, as it quickly removes fluid from the face (a good thing) as you heal. Patients with thicker skin, including African Americans, Asians, Hispanics, and Caucasians will oily skin, will likely take longer to return to normal as well. While every patient is different, most average 14 days for noticeable swelling to dissipate and be presentable. Here is a helpful guide:
- 60% improvement of swelling within 14 days. Very presentable, with makeup.
- 70% within 4 weeks. Resuming most social activities.
- 80% within 3 months. Ready for video and cameras.
- The almost unnoticeable remaining 20%, in 6 months.
How can I improve swelling after a facelift?
A. For 2 weeks before and after your surgery: Minimize your salt intake and minimize medications or supplements that promote bruising: Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Green Tea, Turmeric, Chia seeds, Ginkgo Biloba, Flax Seed, Fish Oil and multivitamin, particularly those with Vitamin E. After the procedure, apply cold compresses or ice packs religiously for the first week, and minimize your activity while still working in a daily walk or light exercise for circulation. Keep your head elevated for the first 2 weeks post op. Use a steroid pack from your doctor as well as a prescription version of arnica montana and bromelain. Ten days after your facelift, get a lymphatic massage to help mobilize fluid and minimize swelling, and try to repeat this once weekly until swelling has subsided entirely.
How can I avoid bruising after a facelift?
A. Swelling and bruising after a facelift typically lasts 14 days. Some younger patients only bruise for 7 days, while older individuals may bruise for 3 weeks, however on average, in 14 days the vast majority of swelling and bruising will have subsided. The length and degree of swelling and bruising depends on one’s pre- and post-op diet, medications, supplements, activity after the procedure, age, the extent of the procedure, lifestyle habits including smoking or alcohol, and environmental factors including heat and pollen that stimulates sneezing. To improve an existing bruise, get a lymphatic massage, apply topical arnica montana, and topical Vitamin K, and increase your intake of leafy green vegetables. To reduce the degree and longevity of bruising, increase your consumption of pineapple, arnica montana, and papaya extract. All of them minimize the formation of bruises.
How much does a facelift cost in Atlanta?
A. Facelifts typically range between $8,000 - $15,000. The variance in cost accounts for the type of facelift and where it is done, and your surgeon's experience, credentials, and reputation. Choosing the right surgeon the first time around is often worth the cost. Dr. Majmundar specializes in Natural Facelifts and Natural Necklifts to give patients a natural, youthful appearance to their face after surgery, and can provide an exact cost after a personal consultation.
How long after a facelift can I get Botox?
A. If a lower facelift was done, Botox on the upper face can be done shortly after surgery. If a browlift was done, it’s best to wait 2-4 weeks before considering Botox.
What happens if I lose a lot of weight after a facelift? Will my face become saggy again?
A. This is a difficult question to provide a definitive answer to, as each patient responds differently. Losing 10 - 15 pounds is unlikely to affect the outcome of a facelift at all. At greater weights, some of the loss will come from the face (and other areas of the body), however it’s best that a cosmetic surgeon answers this for you in person, after a careful review of your health, genetics and facial skin.
When is the best time to have a facelift?
There is not a perfect time to have a natural facelift. Successful surgery has been performed in women in their early 30’s to their late 80’s. Each person ages differently based on genetics and environmental factors.
If you see sagging of your cheeks (jowling) and lines in your neck that are bothersome to you, then it’s a good time to consider our natural facelift. The earlier you address these changes, the better your results are likely to be.
