Facelift without surgery: It does exist.
Surgical facelifts have long been the cornerstone of facial rejuvenation for sagging skin and lines. It is used to improve extra skin in the neck, jowling, and extra eyelid skin and a low brow. It will also smooth out deep lines and wrinkles. In addition to Botox and CO2 laser, facelifts give you a great bang for your buck. The downside is the downtime (14 days on average), the time off of work, scheduling a time during the year that works, and overcoming the fear of looking pulled (though if you choose the right surgeon, this is unlikely).
Nonsurgical technology, such as lasers, botox, and fillers, have allowed the modern era to offer a facelift without surgery. How? With the advent of fillers, plastic surgeons and the scientific community who study the aging process, have come to realize that not only do we age by sagging and forming lines but most of us also age because of the process of volume loss. We lose volume not only in the form of fat but also in the form of thinning muscle, thinning skin, and a thinning skull. All of the above leads to a decrease in volume which causes the overlying skin envelope to descend contributing to jowling and heaviness in the neck. Adding volume, by using volumizers (fillers that have the ability to lift skin AND not disperse), allows the skin to ‘lift’ upward and outward simulating a facelift without surgery or a nonsurgical facelift. Resurfacing the skin with an in-office fractionated CO2 laser helps to smooth the lines and wrinkles below the eyes while Botox or Dysport helps the lines above and around the eyes. It takes less than an hour to perform and downtime is less than 3 days (CO2 laser has approximately 5 days of downtime). In our practice, instead of using needles, we use a form of a blunt needle called a cannula or blunt cannula. This reduces your risk of swelling and/or bruising by greater than 90% decreasing the downtime for many to 24 hours.
